Al-Aqeer Historical Hill

This forgotten hill is located in Al-Wund municipality, adjacent to the area of former "Hitteen" military establishment in the town of "Husseiniya".

The hill consists of fragile sedimentary land because of its location on the eastern bank of an ancient river, what remained of this hill is nothing more than a large valley surrounded by many interlocking plants.

Many archaeological missions were carried out in this area over the last periodk as in the 1980s, the Iraqi Archaeological Inspectorate showed that there were red-brick and square-shaped walls in its infrastructure with a length of 33 cm and a thickness of 8 cm, while the width of the discovered wall was estimated as half a meter.

It was revealed during the mission conducted by the Karbala Center for Research and Studies, that the walls of the palace were completely buried under the dirt, as the soil was mixed with its walls which make it difficult this palace to determine its blueprint, but it was clear that the high-rise construction of the palace dates back many centuries ago, leaving only few remains and ruins that attest to the long history of the palace.

There was an incident that took place in the time of Imam Hussein "peace be upon him", when he came to the city of Karbala in 61 Hijri, that when the great companion "Zuhair ibn al-Qain" wanted to convince Imam Hussein "pbuh" with a fortified place, saying that "Here is a village near us on the Euphrates river, and it is in a stronghold surrounded by the Euphrates except on one side", which matches exactly with the location of Al-Aqeer palace.
