The shrine was rebuilt for the third time in 247 A. H. (861 A. D.) by the Abbasid Caliph al-Muntasir.
Billah who is the son of al-Mutawakil. He erected on the site of the grave of Imam Hussain (A. S.) A building covered by a dome built of clay brick and gypsum.
This building collapsed in 273 A. H. (887 A. D.) And the tomb remained in an exposed position for the following ten years.
